INDIA, which was importing cotton till nineties has now turned into an exporter of cotton with the adoption of BT / Hybrid seeds and improved mechanized intensive farming practices. Till 2000-01, the cotton production was around 14 million bales (1 bale = 170 kgs). The last two years, however, witnessed an all time high cotton production, which exceeded 30 million bales. It is expected that the production will exceed 30 million bales in 2009-10 with Gujarat contributing nearly one third production. This production not only meets the increasing consumption of the domestic industry, but also leaves a comfortable surplus for exports. India, is now a regular exporter of SHANKAR 6 / MECH-1 varieties of cotton, which are accepted in the international markets.
Since the past 2-3 years, there has been an increasing demand for ORGANIC COTTON from the international as well as the local markets. Because of the increased demand, the projected crop of ORGANIC COTTON for 2009-10 is about 0.60 million bales.
